Band Mentoring

It's great seeing young people getting together to form bands and make music. But it can be sad to see the initial excitement and creativity turn to frustration, disappointment and even anger and broken friendships.

When some bands form, they have a good idea of where they're headed and how they are going to get there. But other bands start from "Lets form a band" and have no plans other than that. Still other groups are formed by musicians who like they idea (or perhaps "status") of being in a band, but are not sure how to make it work.

For example, does your band have a leader? And if so, does that person provide leadership, or are they just controlling? All bands need a leader, but will suffer under the control of a dictator! And, do the members of your band have a passion for music, or are they more interested in designing album covers than improving their singing or playing? 

David is now offering a "mentoring" service for young bands. Mentoring can take a number of forms:

  • A "sit-down discussion" looking at the kinds of things bands should discuss but rarely do.
  • A rehearsal session in which David listens to you play and offers constructive suggestions on how to lidt your performance to the next level.
  • Intense work-shopping of a particular song in which David helps you transcribe a cover or arrange your original song, then helps you rehearse it effectively.
  • A combination of the above! 

If you want to include the "sit-down discussion", David will walk you through some of the issues that are often overlooked:

  • Leadership and band politics.
  • Agreeing on ground rules.
  • Band composition, hiring and firing.
  • Selecting a repetoire.
  • Strategies for writing new matrerial.
  • Strategies for selecting and performing cover versions.
  • Strategies for recording a demo.
  • Awareness of the legal aspects to performing music (copyright, record deals).
  • How to rehearse effectively.

Pricing

For those in the South Eastern suburbs, or those willing to travel to Carrum Downs, the cost is $132 (inlcuding GST) for a two-hour session.

For other areas of the Melbourne metroplitan area, the cost is $264 (including GST).

David is aware that young musicians aren't exactly flush with cash! So why not ask your school to arrange a mentoring session?!
