Orchestration
by Walter Piston
This is an excellent book for those interested in learning about how
to use and mix instruments to obtain a particular sound. It teaches
which instruments sound good together, and what pitch and tempo is most
suited to each. Some will find the style somewhat academic in its style,
but it is worth the effort to work through it.

Simple Composition
by Charles Wuorinen
This book is intended to be a guide for composers who need practical
advice on how to work compositionally. It was not intended to be a study
of the twelve-tone system but in fact it does that job very well too.
